Nominations Open for Walter Munk Scholar Award

Nominations for the Walter Munk Scholar Award are open through May 31.

The award, which is jointly sponsored and awarded by the Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans (WMFO) and the Marine Technology Society (MTS), is presented annually to a scholar currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or postdoctoral program.

Walter Munk was called the “Einstein of the Oceans” and spent his 80-year career at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where he made significant contributions to the study of ocean sciences, including: pioneering work on predicting wave and surf conditions used for the successful landings at Normandy on D-Day, underwater sound propagation and the development of acoustic tomography, internal waves, and large scale ocean circulation.
